my semester in a word oof way back when, i wrote about the mistake of a courseload that i took second semester of freshman year. it was a terrible semester and i dont have much to show for it, except notably a fat C in 6.006, MITs intro to algorithms class and possibly the most important class of my major. RIP my GPA! im bracing myself for another terrible semester. i keep telling myself that it probably wont be as bad as freshman spring, but by golly, its gonna be pretty bad. heres what im taking. 6.031 (Software Construction) course 6s most time consuming and soul crushing class which teaches you how to be a *good* software engineer. *good* means that your code follows strict coding standards and is readable and testable and all the adjectives that code in the real world is probably not01 unless that code happens to be written by nasa or healthtech and really cant afford to fail , and especially not in my fields of interest. i feel like its good to know what good code looks like, which is why im not completely bummed out about the class. but i am a bit bummed out anyways. pset 0, which was supposed to be a warmup, very nearly frustrated me to the point of tears. not a good sign!!11!1 6.804 (Computational Cognitive Science) ive been waiting to take this class for a while and im really excited to finally be in it. i was a bit irritated by the first lecture because i arrived a bit late02 still early by MIT time though to the first lecture, and was redirected into the overflow room because the actual lecture hall for the class is too small??03 unclear why they cant just have the lecture in a bigger classroom... #salty and i had to watch a livestream of the lecture that had a LOT of technical difficulties. but im still super excited. the class goes into computational models of thinking and discusses a lot of interesting topics on how AIs use maching learning and neural networks to think, and what thinking really is as a concept. for the final project, we get to play around with (or come up with our own!) computational model and write a paper on it, which im excited for. the professor also told us to our faces that the class is an easy A, so thats nice too. 6.840 (Theory of Computation) im taking this class to avoid taking 6.046, the intermediate algorithms class, because i did terribly in intro to algorithms and this class seems to play to my strengths considerably more. were currently discussing finite automata and regex, topics that are important to computer scientists and also have a lot of cool mathematical concepts behind them. this class is definitely going to wreck me because the problem sets are really tough, but hopefully ill push through. im actually and this is rare for me reading the textbook for the class, and lo and behold, its super helpful. if i get a B ill be stoked. 6.911 and 6.912 (GEL) im in the gordon engineering leadership program this year, which basically teaches you how to be an effective teammate and a good leader at least, thats what they say. i do agree with them that leadership is something that can be learned and improved through practice, and i definitely think that i could use some practice being a leader. i dont think i naturally tend towards being a leader, but maybe thats something that can be improved through practice too. GEL also gives you a bunch of chances to network with alums and recruiters, and although networking is definitely not my favorite activity, its definitely become less painful as ive done it more. i credit UPOP04 MITs career accelerator program for sophomores which has a lot of annoying requirements a lot for this, even though at some points during the year, completing the requirements for it was a little bit like pulling teeth. CMS.616 (Games and Culture) i finally made it into t.l. taylors05 t.l. is a very respected scholar in the game studies field and shes written a bunch of books and papers that are super important to the field class by the skin of my teeth! the class is always super oversubscribed and she gives first priority to seniors06 second priority goes to juniors who are CMS majors, which is how i managed to slide in . im starting to gestate ideas for my CMS thesis, and im hoping that the material and discussions in this class will help me come up with a topic that im willing to spend hundreds of hours writing about. joons also in it with me! but thats not all!!11! i do in fact still have extracurriculars to squeeze in somehow! Fencing: its my third year fencing and i think ive gotten a lot better, but still not good enough to confidently07 if you dont have confidence in sabre fencing, you will probably lose right of way, and if you lose right of way, you will not get any points fence the best members of the team. i also really need to fence with contacts, because ive always fenced without any sort of eyewear and i realize that this may be affecting my performance :P. fencing is always a huge time commitment, but i need the exercise and i love the womens sabre squad dearly so im excited for the season to start. UROP: this is my third term UROPing at the Personal Robots lab in the Media Lab, and i really love the work that im doing game design for a game that im indepently developing for a study, and interaction and activity design for an online AI education curriculum. i realized this summer that i want to move more into the design aspects of technology, and the work that i do at the Media Lab fits my interests perfectly. ive also been convinced that i should apply to the Media Lab for grad school. stay tuned on that. East Campus government:  im in my second term as a hall chair for first east, and try to show up to every east campus government wide meeting, especially since east campus politics are probably going to be a bit spicy and controversial this year. i like to listen to the drama as well as occasionally provide some input. ABCS at Facebook: this is basically a weekly seminar? sort of thing that i got accepted to at Facebook. it gives you practice with coding challenge questions08 which i am both terrible at and terrified of , which i desperately need for the upcoming recruiting season. last year, i didnt apply to any companies that had coding challenges because they scare me. luckily, i still got the job i wanted the most, but i dont think thats gonna fly this year. classes have only been going a week, but the stress is already starting to pile up. career fair is NEXT WEEK and recruiting events have been going on since basically the first day of school. i cant tell you how many jobs ive applied to already, or how many im going to frantically apply to in the week before career fair. and all of this is on top of many hard classes, many hours of extracurriculars, and a few hours of trying to chill out a week. tl;dr its gonna be *quite* a semester. will i survive without dropping a class? i hope so, because all of these classes satisfy major requirements09 except for GEL i guess, but i really would like a job for the summer and if GEL can help me get one then ill do anything it asks of me and i really dont want to have to retake any of them! wish me luck! hopefully ill come up for air sometime soon. Several psychological factors play a role in childhood obesity causing depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. The emotional toll it takes on a childs life is draining if they do not have proper help and guidance to a healthier lifestyle. Low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence appears more in school when the child starts to compare their bodies to the rest of their classmates. The comments concerning the childs weight consumes them and its all they think about. It creates anxiety and fear of being around social groups. It can be a very dark time and its important to shine light on these issues and help these children see how beautiful life can be when youre healthy and strong. Cutting in half high calorie and fat intake such as processed foods, sugar intake, and decreasing the portion size on your plate helps significantly. Setting goals and checking them off the list once completed will give the child a sense of motivation. The variations of physical activity are endless, they can be as simple as taking the dog for a walk or chores like cutting the grass or they can be as fun as a Zumba class. The child must feel safe and secure doing any physical activities which might take a while to warm up too. Make sure you give them reassurance of their progress and how far theyve come. Reducing the screen time provided by any device with outdoor activities helps the child become more active and social. This will help keep the child on their toes and will strive to join some sort of sport or an extra after school activity. School policies and government programs should be a part of the curriculum in every district across the country. School policies shouldnt allow sugary beverages in the schools vending machine or high calorie snacks. Enforcing students to learn about the risk of obesity, how to avoid it and its long-term effects. Did You Know the US Apologized to Native Americans

In 1993, the  U.S. Congress  devoted an entire  resolution  to  apologizing to Native Hawaiians  for overthrowing their kingdom in 1893. But a U.S. apology to Native Americans took until 2009 and came stealthily tucked away in an unrelated  spending bill. If you just happened to be reading the 67-page  Defense Appropriations Act of 2010  (H.R. 3326), tucked away on page 45, in between sections detailing how much of your money the U.S. military would spend on what, you might notice Section 8113: Apology to Native Peoples of the United States. Sorry For the Violence, Maltreatment, and Neglect The United States, acting through Congress, states Sec. 8113, apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for the many instances of violence, maltreatment, and neglect inflicted on Native Peoples by citizens of the United States; and expresses its regret for the ramifications of former wrongs and its commitment to build on the positive relationships of the past and present to move toward a brighter future where all the people of this land live reconciled as brothers and sisters, and harmoniously steward and protect this land together. But, You Cant Sue Us for It Of course, the apology also makes it clear that it in no way admits liability in any of the dozens of lawsuits still pending against the U.S. government by Native Americans. Nothing in this section ... authorizes or supports any claim against the United States; or serves as a settlement of any claim against the United States, states the apology. The apology also urges the President of the United States to acknowledge the wrongs of the United States against  Indian tribes  in the history of the United States in order to bring healing to this land. And the President Wont Acknowledge It In his 6 years in office after the enactment of the Defense Appropriations Act of 2010, President Obama never publicly acknowledged the Apology to Native Peoples of the United States. If the wording of the apology sounds vaguely familiar, its because it is the same as that in the  Native American Apology Resolution  (S.J.RES. 14),  proposed in both 2008 and 2009  by former U.S. Senators Sam Brownback (R-Kansas), and Byron Dorgan (D., North Dakota). The Senators unsuccessful efforts to pass a stand-alone Native American Apology Resolution date back to 2004. Along with its 1993 apology to native Hawaiians, Congress had previously apologized to Japanese-Americans for their internment during World War II and to African-Americans for allowing slavery to exist in the United States prior to  emancipation. And the Navajo Nation was Not Impressed   On December 19, 2012, Mark Charles, representing the Navajo Nation, hosted a public reading of the Apology to Native Peoples of the United States in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. This apology was buried in H.R. 3326, the 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations Act, wrote Charles on his  Reflections from the Hogan blog. It was signed by President Obama on Dec. 19, 2009, but was never announced, publicized or read publicly by either the White House or the 111th Congress. Given the context, the appropriations sections of H.R. 3326  sounded almost nonsensical, wrote Charles. We were not pointing fingers, nor were we calling out our leaders by name, we were just highlighting the inappropriateness of the context and delivery of their apology. What About Reparations? This official apology naturally raises the question of reparations to Native Americans for their decades of mistreatment at the hands of the U.S. Government. While the issue of reparations to African-Americans for slavery is constantly debated, similar reparations to Native Americans is rarely mentioned. The reason most often cited for the discrepancy is the difference between the African American and American Indian experiences. African Americans—sharing the same history, culture, and language—also shared similar experiences of prejudice and segregation. In comparison, various Native Americans tribes—encompassing dozens of different cultures and languages—had vastly different experiences. According to the government, these differing experiences makes arriving at a blanket reparation policy for Native Americans nearly impossible. The issue returned to the public spotlight in February 2019, when Sen. Elizabeth Warren, one of several Democratic 2020 presidential hopefuls, stated that Native Americans should be included in the â€Å"conversation† on reparations for African-Americans. Warren, who had controversially claimed to be of Native American ancestry herself, told reporters in Manchester, N.H. that America has an â€Å"ugly history of racism† and suggested reparations as one way to deal with it. â€Å"We need to confront it head-on and we need to talk about the right away to address it and make change,† she said.

Learn Whether Cloud Seeding Can Kill Hurricanes

Efforts at storm modification date back to the 1940s, when Dr. Irwin Langmuir and a team of scientist from General Electric explored the possibility of using ice crystals to weaken storms. This was Project Cirrus. Enthusiasm about this project, combined with devastation from a series of hurricanes that made landfall, prompted the U.S. federal government to appoint a Presidential Commission to investigate storm modification. What Was Project Stormfury? Project Stormfury was a research program for hurricane modification that was active between 1962 and 1983. The Stormfury hypothesis was that seeding the first rain band outside of the eyewall clouds with silver iodide (AgI) would cause supercooled water to turn into ice. This would release heat, which would cause the clouds to grow faster, pulling in air that would otherwise reach the wall of clouds around the eye. The plan was to cut off the air supply feeding the original eyewall, which would cause it to fade away while a second, wider eyewall would grow further from out from the storms center. Because the wall would be wider, air spiraling into the clouds would be slower. The partial conservation of angular momentum was intended to decrease the force of the strongest winds. At the same time the cloud seeding theory was being developed, a group at the Navy Weapons Center in California was developing new seeding generators that could release large amounts of silver iodide crystals i nto storms. Hurricanes That Were Seeded With Silver Iodide In 1961, the eyewall of Hurricane Esther was seeded with silver iodide. The hurricane stopped growing and showed signs of possible weakening. Hurricane Beulah was seeded in 1963, again with some encouraging results. Two hurricanes were then seeded with massive quantities of silver iodide. The first storm (Hurricane Debbie, 1969) weakened temporarily after being seeded five times. No significant effect was detected on the second storm (Hurricane Ginger, 1971). Later analysis of the 1969 storm suggested that the storm would have weakened with or without the seeding, as part of the normal eyewall replacement process.​ Discontinuing the Seeding Program Budget cuts and lack of definitive success led to the discontinuation of the hurricane seeding program. In the end, it was decided that funding would be better spent learning more about how hurricanes work and in finding ways to better prepare for and lessen the damage from natural storms. Even if it turned out cloud seeding or other artificial measures could lessen the intensity of the storms, there was considerable debate about where on their course the storms would be altered and concern over the ecological implications of changing the storms.

Many believe that there are intrinsic reasons to protect biodiversity, separate from all human needs and desires. These arguments are based on the idea that humans are part of nature, not separate from it. A somewhat contradictory view is the anthropocentric theory. This is based on the idea that biodiversity has value for us as humans. The first, most direct example of this lies in goods obtained from nature. The most important, and often overlooked, is food. It is natural and necessary for us to consume a variety of living things, from vegetables to animals, in order to remain healthy. Cloth is another such example; we need the diversity of life in order to make clothes for ourselves, whether they be cotton, as many are now, or animal skin, as used in the past. Other goods include pharmaceuticals and medicines that are derived from naturally existing sources. An improvement to McDonald’s social responsibility could therefore be achieved through implementing an ethics department, or even just some experts on ethical structures. The company would then be seen as more reliable and ethical, as experts would be more subjective. Moreover the company would increase its transparency and benefit from the positive image. The Code of ethics is a technique to develop an improved social responsibility and is an important part of the company’s identity (Samson Draft, 2009; Senske, 2009). Furthermore it is a strict document which describes values in ethics and social matters of an organisation (Samson Daft, 2009). After Parsons (2004) guidelines are given which are based on the values and matters to ensure equivalent decisions in similar situations. The members of the organisation have to follow and live by the code of ethics in order to avoid unethical behaviour and engender an ethical sensitivity (Menzel, 2006). Resultantly it creates a kind of trust for the stakeholders (Senske, 2009). Earlier McDonald’s made statements about its code of conduct to encourage their stakeholders, but nothing was issued about the efforts which were being made. As an example Mc Donald’s paid most of their employees less than the usual adult minimum wage (Transport and General Workers Union, 2004). Furthermore poor working conditions with discrimination, illegal working hours, and bad safety conditions were shown at McDonald’s. In 2002 the first McDonald’s Social Responsibility Report was released. This report was supported by a code of business conduct, which is the main structure for employee ethics. It is utilized to make sure that the internal ethical requirements are met, such as a secure working environment and employee rights (McDonald’s Corporation, 2004). But the latest Corporate Responsibility Report from 2004 doesn’t say much about how situations have been improved concerning the payment for example. Furthermore it shows that McDonald’s did not change its in-house methods or impact on the society and the environment (Hawken, 2002). Case Study Bodegas Torres Commerce Essay Bodegas Torres is a Spanish wine factory created in 1870 by two brothers, Jaime and Miguel Torres. The company gave priority to quality and innovation. After the two brothers died, it was the turn of Miguels son, Juan, to run the company. He started to product brandies which was the first innovation of the company. In 1932, Miguel, Juans son, succeeded to his father after his death. With the help of his wife Margarita, Miguel worked hard to reduce his lack of experience regarding wine. Since 1870, five generations of the Torres family were able to make a place among the wine world. The first modest operation, located near the Vilafrance Penedà ¨s appellation Penedà ¨s in Catalonia, has quickly made a name and reputation despite heavy events (phylloxera crisis, civil war). Subsequently, the Bodegua Torres took possession of other vineyards in the appellations of Conca de Barbera, Toro, Jumilla, Ribera del Duero, Priorat and more recently in Rioja. The first exports of the company date back to the 40s, and have continued to grow since then. The group closed the year 2010 with a C. A. EUR 205 million, an increase of 11.5% compared to 2009. This resu lt is mainly due to the increase in exports, which ranks the top wine producers exporting Spanish sparkling wine not alone in AOC. Torres exports represent 72% of sales. The latter increased to countries such as Finland, Canada, Norway and Russia. But the real breakthrough for the group occurred in China. After 30 years of commercial, wine sales to that country rose 40% in 2010. The group became the first company that distributes wine directly. China Torres charged in the last year 16.16 million EUR. As an example, the group sold under their brand of wine Mas La Plana, 1000 cases of 12 bottles in China, with a production of 10,000 cases. In 1997, the company signed for the establishment of a Joint-Venture in China with the   Zhangjiakou Great Wall Torres Winery Co. Ltd. Torres group is also known for its innovations. The alcohol-free wine is one of its flagship products that perfectly matches the new fashion market for aesthetic and health, according to the Chairman of the group. The research department of the company is very active and successful. The company always tries to find better ways of production or new products that may be a good fit for new customers. The structure of the company The company Bodegas Torres has always tried to change its structure according to the market, the trend and changing environment. In order to identify the differences, we will use the Hofstede model based of 4 criteria which are: Power Distance: When it is high, it means, for H, the main characteristics following: the power is a social base, and the economic and social relations are marked by inequality and dependence. Individualism versus Collectivism: Individualism, in contrast to the sense of community is marked by the importance of personal responsibility, individual initiative and respect for privacy, strictly distinguished professional life. Individual interests are privileged in the functioning of organizations. Masculinity versus Femininity: Masculinity is characterized by the following: assertiveness, lack of modesty, the emphasis on success, money and external image, ambition and the desire for personal fulfillment. In opposition, femininity means in particular the emphasis on the relational harmony, rather than assertiveness: femininity is the search for consensus and harmony, the importance of human relationships. Uncertainty Avoidance: It means the willingness to risk guarantee, which can be expressed by the elements following: anxiety of the future, fear of change and difference, preference for stable and rigid structures, and possibly for the gerontocracy, the concern establish procedures clear, precise and detailed to avoid hazards. This criteria will be applied to Spain, United States and China in order to better understand the cultural differences which may help us to highlight management threats but also opportunities. Spain Power Distance: with a score of 57 points, the power distance is relatively high. It is important for employees to get feedback from their boss in order to keep their motivation high. Unlike Europe, the hierachy is the the same. Even if managers are weel-defined in the organization, they are always accessible. Feedbacks from bother managers and employees are important. Individualism versus collectivism: with a high score of 91, we can easily say that the United States is an individualist country. It means that people have to work for themselves, care for themselves and also for relatives. There is no we in the American society but mainly I. In business, employees have to be reliable and autonomous. Masculinity versus femininity: with a score of 62, the country can be seen as masculine. The main value that is taught in school and appreciated in business is always go for the best or always try your best. American people live to work because their life depend on it. Uncertainty avoidance: with a score of 46, we can say that American people are not afraid of changes and may consider them as challenges. American workers like new idea and are opened to changes in their work environment. China Power Distance: with a score of 80, we can say that in China, inequalities are acceptable. Also, the notion of hierarchy is very strong which imply an important respect of superiors. Everyone should stay at is place and there is no room for initiatives. Individualism versus collectivism: with a low score of 20, we can say that China is a strong collectivist country. People think a lot about others like colleagues or relatives and after they think about themselves. But the score also mean a weak commitment to the company they work for. Masculinity versus femininity: with a score of 66, we can say that China is a masculine society. Work and success is really important and many people may sacrifice their families to get advancement in their work. Uncertainty avoidance: with a low score of 30, Chinese people are used to uncertainty. One of the biggest one is the language which is full of ambiguities. Intercultural Management and Motivation Motivation is the set of factors determining the action and behavior of an individual to achieve a goal or perform an activity. It is the combination of all the reasons conscious or unconscious, collective and individual, that encourage the individual to act in a team. This is one of the challenges of the managerial function. In our case, the problem is how to motivation people if they dont have the same drivers. It is important first to analyze the needs of employees wherever they are from. For that we can use the Maslows theory. It offers a systematic approach to the needs of the working man and prioritizes different levels in a pyramid. Maslow believed that human behavior is dictated by the needs, man is instinctive, biological and fundamental. Five groups of needs are distinguished: physiological needs, the need for safety, ,the need for social, the need for esteem, the need of self-actualization. According to the country, people will give a different priority to the needs. It is the role of managers to understand this dimension. Beside Maslows work, we can find that Herzberg also worked on the motivation. He connects the motivation and satisfaction at work and uses a common assumption in all theories of need: the unfulfilled need is motivation. Herzberg distinguish two kinds of needs: those that are common to all living beings and those that are specific to humans. Only the latter are a source of motivation, hygiene needs, as soon they are fulfilled they reduce dissatisfaction and are therefore more motivating. People dont react the same way depending on the country and a new management strategy has to be designed in order to lead teams in an efficient way. Keeping the family business Many companies try to go global because they see opportunities of growth and reduced costs. But higher costs are not systemically bad. The family business of the Torres family is profitable and its financial situation is healthy contrary to many other firms who rely on debts. Moreover, the brand image which is highly appreciated and well-known will suffer from an over-internationalization.
